2026 Hailed as the Year of the Frog Game.

My key observation from the recent indie games event was undoubtedly entertaining, my main revelation was not the intended one: I am certain that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.

A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—incorporate these leaping protagonists. Considering a band of frogs is known as an army, it appears they are launching an invasion.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Croaking characters are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. Looking back at titles like Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. However, their popularity has seemingly increased in recent times.

A cursory search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an overwhelming flood of results. While, some of these are obscure titles, a great many are bona fide amphibian adventures.

Charting the Croak Comeback

To understand this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the last half-decade of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, counting games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.

The findings reveal an unmistakable trend: a marked uptick from under 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: where is this interest coming from? The amphibian's elevated place in the public consciousness is partially apparent elsewhere, for example the popularity of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. Yet, the trend in gaming appears uniquely pronounced.

Designing for a Sticky Tongue

In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs possess inherent design advantages for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as quirky characters that often become a standout feature in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues enable a host of innovative control schemes.

Many of the announced projects directly leverage these traits. Examples include the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the elasticity-based puzzles of Stretchmancer.

On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance

So, what does this mean for 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the evidence suggests for it to be the biggest year for amphibian gaming.

When these games are received positively—and based on past trends, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we might just be witnessing a full-blown croaking cultural moment.
