Bluefin Tuna Commands Historic Sum of 3.2 million dollars at Tokyo Auction
A substantial Pacific bluefin tuna made headlines at the Tokyo's Toyosu fish market this Monday, securing a record-breaking bid of 510.3 million yen ($3.2 million; £2.4m) during the venue's inaugural auction of the year.
The winning offer for the 243-kilogram fish was placed by the operator of a popular sushi chain, which manages locations domestically and abroad.
"The year's tuna brings fortune," remarked the business owner, a notable bidder at the annual first sale.
Referred to as the Tuna Tycoon, this businessman is noted for making record bids for bluefin tuna at these symbolic January auctions.
Bidding Surprise and Historic Past
Following the auction, the successful bidder told journalists that he was "taken aback at the winning bid," stating, "I expected we would be able to purchase it a little cheaper, but the price soared rapidly."
This new acquisition exceeds his previous historic purchases:
- He bid 56.5 million yen back in 2012.
- He bid 155 million yen a year later.
- In 2019, he won a tuna for 333.6 million yen (2.1 million dollars).
Despite previously remarking that he thought he "bid too high," he has now proceeded to shatter his own record once again.
A Tradition of High Prices
The opening auction at the Toyosu fish market is traditionally associated with sky-high prices. Last year, the initial tuna was bought for 207 million yen by a different sushi chain operator, which indicated the fish would be served at its restaurants throughout the country.
The intense atmosphere at the fish market during these pre-sunrise auctions has evolved into a must-see spectacle in Tokyo. Monday's auction, which commenced around 05:00 local time, was no different.
Immediate Consumption
The multi-million-dollar tuna was promptly processed for patrons at the winner's sushi chains immediately after the auction ended.
"I believe like I've started the year in a good way after eating something so lucky as the year begins," remarked one happy patron.
