The 2026 Formula 1 cars are expected to be smaller, nimbler and more environmentally friendly relative to present-day cars.

Formula 1 has revealed the simplified vocabulary that will be used to describe the technical complexities of its new 2026 regulations.

The sport is introducing what is arguably the largest technical shift in its competitive history next season, featuring revised car and engine specifications and the compulsory introduction of 100% sustainable fuels.

The revised engines, which keep the hybrid V6 layout, boast a substantially higher energy storage, driving major innovations in the aero packages.

Throughout races, pilots will tactically deploy battery power – potentially on hot laps – to extract the optimal result.

Wide-ranging research were undertaken with a diverse audience, including long-time followers and newcomers, to identify which phrases would aid comprehension of the key features of the 2026 changes.

The key objective was to make a set of intricate technical aspects of the competition as straightforward as possible for the broadest viewership.

Consequently, previous placeholder terms for some systems – such as "modes labelled X and Z" for the moveable wings – have been phased out in favor of intuitive labels that clearly indicate the actual function of the innovation.

What's the New Technology?

The FIA states that competitors will have greater control to make decisions regarding power usage, energy recovery, and conservation.

The 2026 rules mandate a series of modes that will be clearly indicated on television graphics to improve the viewers' comprehension of the race battle.

  • Attack Mode: This replaces the present overtaking aid. It provides a surge of additional ERS power available when a driver is within one second the leading car to facilitate an overtake.

What's Changing on the Cars?

The next-generation machines will be smaller and lighter compared to the 2025 spec, with a car length shortened by 200mm to 3,400mm, width reduced by 100mm – down to 1,900mm – and the lowest permissible weight lowered by 30kg.

Total aerodynamic grip is anticipated to be reduced by approximately 15-30%, although squads will naturally regain performance as they optimize their packages.

Air resistance has been slashed by 40%. The cars will utilize moveable wing elements – front and rear wings will adjust on the straights to reduce drag and enhance velocity and revert into place for optimal grip in corners.

Wheels will continue to use 18-inch wheel rims, but the actual tyres will be slimmer, by a quarter-centimetre on the front and 30 millimetres on the rear axle.

What's Changing in the Engines?

The revised hybrid units will have an near-equal balance in power produced by the internal combustion engine and the ERS, a rise from about 20% electrical in the current formula.

The energy recovery system is made less complex through the deletion of the Motor Generator Unit – Heat, the complicated and costly device that generated electricity from the turbocharger.

Every car on the grid will be obliged to compete on 100% sustainable fuel, created from organic sources or synthetic industrial processes.
