Son of British Couple Held by Taliban ‘Overjoyed’ as They Come Back to Britain

The child of a British couple held by the Afghan rulers in Afghanistan for nearly eight months has expressed that he is “deeply moved” by their freedom.

Peter Reynolds, eighty, and his wife his partner, 76, who lived in Afghanistan for close to two decades, are set to fly to the UK on Saturday after meeting up with their child in Qatar.

Jonathan Reynolds remarked that he was “ecstatic and massively grateful” to everyone who helped in securing their release.

The Taliban, who apprehended the couple on 1 February, claimed the two had violated Afghan laws and were released after legal processes—though the authorities never provided a specific reason for their detention.

Emotional moments took place as the couple’s offspring, their child, greeted her mother and father after they stepped off the plane in Qatar.

The wife stated, “We are looking forward to returning to the country if we can. We are Afghan citizens.”

Jonathan echoed these hopes, noting that “their desire would be to continue living there and to continue the work they were involved in.”

UK Prime Minister the premier commended the “critical part” played by Qatar in securing their freedom.

The couple married in Kabul in the seventies and spent the past 18 years operating a charitable training programme that had been approved by regional authorities.

Their son added, “They are not only compassionate for the people of Afghanistan, but they have vision as well, and the programmes they've been doing has been very fruitful and has a huge beneficial effect.”

He revealed that a recently, he managed to share “very positive” updates about their initiatives with his mother and father over the phone.

Barbie’s first response was that they had “additional tasks ahead.”

But Jonathan added, “How is that possible in a country where you're unwanted?”

Their deep connection for Afghanistan was shown by their decision to stay in the region after the new government took control in August 2021, while many other foreign nationals left.

Their freedom comes after a long period of public lobbying by their family, who had detailed the harrowing conditions of their imprisonment.

Jonathan stated in July that his father had been experiencing severe spasms and his mother was “weakened” from anaemia and malnutrition.

A representative from Qatar mentioned that the pair were moved from a detention facility to a more spacious facility with better conditions during the last phase of talks over their freedom.

The authorities insisted that the couple received sufficient health treatment during their confinement and that their human rights were respected.

The couple were receiving health evaluations in the Qatari capital before departing for the UK.

Britain does not formally acknowledge the Taliban government and closed its diplomatic mission in Kabul when the group regained power.

The Foreign Office advise that support for UK citizens in Afghanistan is “extremely restricted” and advise against all travel to the region.
