Super Typhoon Fung-wong Ravages the Philippines: Two Fatalities and Large-Scale Evacuations Reported

The Philippines has been hit hard by Intense Cyclone Fung-wong, resulting in a minimum of two fatalities and forced the evacuation of more than 1.4 million individuals.

Officials stated that the powerful weather system triggered widespread flash flooding, storm surges, landslides, and destructive gale-force winds, leading to the evacuation of 1.4 million people nationwide.

Extensive Destruction and Rescue Efforts

In Pandan, Catanduanes, a severely affected area, disaster response teams recorded rising waters climbing to the tops of houses and homes being swept away by the powerful currents.

Our team rescued 14 individuals stranded atop a house surrounded by water in a flood-prone area,” a disaster-mitigation officer stated. “A father frantically contacted us, reporting the roof of his house was at risk of tearing away by the wind. We saved him along with four family members.”

As of Monday morning, authorities confirmed at least two deaths: one from drowning in Catanduanes and a second individual who died after her home gave way on Samar island.

Typhoon Strength and Forecast

The super typhoon weakened to a typhoon on Monday morning as it crossed the main island, home to the national capital.

According to meteorological authorities, the storm’s sustained wind speed decreased from 185 km/h to 165 km/h, though wind bursts were still reaching over 170 mph.

The cyclone is projected to continue weakening as it moves north toward Taiwan.

Response and Recovery

The national disaster response service stated efforts were ongoing to evaluate destruction to infrastructure and homes.

Approximately 6,000 evacuation centres have been opened to temporarily house 92,000 families.

Previous Storms and Environmental Factors

The typhoon hit just days after another severe storm, that claimed hundreds of lives and left dozens unaccounted for prior to advancing to Vietnam, where it killed five.

Search operations for those still missing had to be suspended on Sunday over risks for rescue workers.

Global warming is causing cyclones stronger and common. Fung-wong is the twenty-first storm to impact the nation in 2025.

Researchers report that the frequency of intense cyclones striking the islands has increased doubled in the past twenty years.

International estimates indicate that severe weather events cause approximately US$3.5 million in damage for the Philippines annually.

The nation’s leader declared an emergency declaration on Thursday due to the extensive devastation caused by the prior typhoon and the expected damage from Fung-wong.
