The developer behind popular titles like Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin just unveiled its next major project, creating significant hype within the gaming community. However, recent statements from the studio's lead designer have brought nuance to the conversation, addressing the team's philosophy toward AI tools.
Augmenting Workflows, Not Cutting Jobs
In a recent message, Larian's director detailed that the developer is utilizing AI technology for particular ancillary purposes. These include fleshing out presentation materials, generating initial concept art, and writing draft copy.
Notably, Vincke emphasized that the final assets in the game will be authored entirely by real writers. "We are developing every line in-house," he stated.
Our studio is constantly expanding our team of concept artists and are currently forming dedicated writer rooms.
Since concept art is being particularly mentioned — we currently have over twenty artistic staff and have job openings for further artists.
All our efforts we do is supplementary and aimed at letting our team spend additional energy on making content.
Any machine learning application implemented properly is supplementary to a creative team workflow, not a substitute for their talent.
Addressing Concerns and Clarifying the Vision
The news of AI usage originally generated backlash among some the fanbase. In reply, Vincke provided more elaboration on online platforms.
"We use AI tools to gather inspiration, in the same way we use search engines and physical media," he stated. "During the very early planning process we use it as a rough outline for layout which we then replace with original concept art."
He continued, "We've hired creatives for their inherent skill, not for their willingness to replicate what a AI generates."
Focused Uses for Machine Learning
Vincke had earlier broken down the team's practical approach to machine learning, defining its use into three main areas:
- Automation of Tedious Tasks: This encompasses motion capture cleaning, voice editing, and Larian-specific work like retargeting animations.
- Accelerated Iteration: Using systems to speedily create simple versions of gameplay ideas to validate concepts ahead of expensive implementation.
- Future Potential for Gameplay: Exploring how machine learning could one day create emergent player agency, especially in creating dynamic reactions in a vast role-playing world.
He clearly affirmed that core creative domains — such as writing — are are in no way areas where the company is replacing human involvement. Conversely, Larian is recruiting more in these precise roles.
"We are neither releasing a game with any AI components, nor planning on cutting staff to substitute them with artificial intelligence," Vincke summarized.
