The Iconic Puzzle Game Couldn't Succeed at The Game Awards — A New Category Could Fix That

Each time a major honors show draws close, there’s always a clamor for the addition additional classifications to recognize unsung work and fill the hearts of followers who have specialized interests.

A fellow writer made the case advocating for terror-themed awards. That would rule. Equally deserving are strategy board titles, which is a passionate advocate's mission. But they will have to forgive me for pushing forward since similar to dedicated enthusiasts, there's a strong justification for why my demand remains most pressing and important of all. This is the request: It's essential to create a category for puzzle games.

The Genre Classification Challenge

Categorizing art by genre isn't exact; opinions vary greatly, and inevitably generate discussions resulting in unclear classifications. There’s a reason film award organizations avoid this approach. But it is an unavoidable compromise in the world of video games, which are so diverse they hardly constitute a single creative category.

To recognize the complete range of achievement in video games to gain proper attention, and to ensure all game types to compete fairly, genre categories are essential.

Existing Game Classification System

Prominent interactive entertainment events presently include classifications covering Action-oriented games, Adventure-action titles, Role-Playing, Fighting, Sim/Strategy, plus athletic and racing experiences. Between them, these award types effectively encompass numerous genres, allowing placement accommodating various experiences.

This doesn't apply to logic-based experiences. No suitable classification appears to put them. Consider three of outstanding current releases, all very different: building puzzles from a specific release, the pulse-pounding block-matching in a different title, thought-provoking social scenarios from additional release. Which classification works between these six categories? Simply put, no category fits.

Acknowledgment Issues

There are dozens outstanding logic titles launched regularly without proper recognition in entertainment awards, except when they manage to fit for categories like Handheld titles, Virtual reality experiences, and the highly challenging independent game categories.

  • An iconic brain-teaser received no recognition completely during that awards season
  • Another creative title missed out that year
  • A beloved organization game got ignored in 2021
  • Limited numbers of puzzle games barely qualified for independent or mobile categories

Significance of Puzzle Games

Commonly they're modest productions, yet the craft behind logic titles is of massive significance. Famous handheld logic titles count as most engaged experiences globally continuing this trend for an extended period.

The famous puzzle experience rivals famous sandbox experiences for the title of best-selling game of all time; it’s also in the running for best game of all time. Logic titles represent cornerstones within interactive entertainment, and they are in conversation across multiple categories.

The Solution and Justification

Logic titles wouldn't face that issue. One could readily select multiple candidates interesting, varied, worthy titles annually without trouble — actually, with challenge, since numerous excellent many worthy titles.

To emphasize again, these represent titles without proper classification at major gaming awards. Brain-teaser creators are working at the hard edge of video game design, developing some of most fundamental forms of the video game form. Just like cinema stunt performers, they deserve recognition. We shouldn't delay decades.
