The city's incoming mayor, Zohran Mamdani, has decided to take up residence in the iconic Gracie Mansion, leaving behind the rent-stabilised apartment that was a central issue in his run for office.

An Iconic Home

Built in 1799, Gracie Mansion has served as the mayoral home for nearly all New York City mayors after the post-war period.

Yet, Mamdani, for whom affordable housing is a central platform, was not quick to announce his residency plans promptly following his electoral win in November.

"This decision rested on our family's safety and the need to dedicating my complete efforts on implementing the platform on affordability voters voted for," stated Mamdani on Monday.

A Fond Farewell

Mamdani lived in the Astoria neighbourhood, a community known for its vibrant immigrant populations and international dining.

"To Astoria: thank you for demonstrating the true spirit of New York City," he noted.

"Even though I'm moving in the neighborhood, the community will always live within me and my efforts as mayor," he added.

A Contentious Issue

In his race for mayor, Mamdani connected his key pledge – to freeze the rent – to his circumstances as a tenant.

Yet his opponents, most notably one-time governor Andrew Cuomo, criticised Mamdani for remaining in the affordable housing even though he hails from a famous family.

Previous Exceptions

Not every mayor have decided to stay at Gracie Mansion.

Michael Bloomberg, the business magnate, chose to live in his own townhouse on Manhattan's Upper East Side for his tenure, which concluded in 2012.

Rather, Bloomberg said he believed it could serve as a space for civic gatherings, and pushed for significant upgrades of the aging mansion.

A Vastly Different Setting

As he settles into Gracie Mansion near his first day on 1 January, he will find himself in an environment very different than his modest Astoria home.

Adorned in butter yellow paint, emerald shutters, and white railings, Gracie Mansion is an ornate structure situated by the East River.

Inside, the first floor of the Federal-style mansion is furnished consistent with the home's historical period.

The estate, which reportedly has several bedrooms, also has fortified protections to safeguard the mayor and his family.

Supernatural Speculation

Past occupants have claimed that Gracie Mansion also has spiritual residents.

Chirlane McCray, the spouse of former mayor Bill De Blasio, once said that doors occasionally opened and closing inexplicably, and the floorboards made strange noises.

Former Mayor Eric Adams was adamant. "I don't care the skeptics say," he declared in 2022. "It has spirits in there, man."

The Value of Rent Stabilization

His former home is under rent control, which means the city regulates on how much landlords can increase rent each year.

City residents consider these apartments valuable lifelines as the housing expenses rises faster than the means of many residents.

Data indicated Mamdani his rent was $2,300 each month for his apartment.

Based on data from the property website Zillow, the median rent for a one-bedroom apartment in New York City is $3,500 a month.
